Interesting. That could be another explanation or an additional cause for the 
slow access... To whom it may concern: 

I did some tests between Ephpod and iTunes:

It was no problem migrating from EphPod to iTunes: iTunes read the database 
just fine and could add some additional songs. I found the new files - with 
the real filenames, not with the numbers - in some of the directories; no 
idea how iTunes manages this.

After this I decided to wipe clean the iPod because it is faster than defrag 
it. But: EphPod could not write the database - it deleted all the songs 
though...

So I reflashed iPod with the updater and hooked into iTunes that synced all 
files just well. But - the performance of all actions on iPod was 
_significantly_ slower; you could hear the harddisk clatter and search - then 
it skipped a song; the well known effect. This went with every album I 
selected.

Humbly and slightly pissed I wiped iPod clean with EphPod - which could not 
write the database again. So I renamed the iTunes folder, started EphPod 
again and synced my files again. Interesting enough, the transfer seemed to 
be a lot faster than with iTunes.

Ergo, I switched back to EphPod and lived happily ever after. :-)

I might add that iTunes created another files within the iPod_Control\iTunes 
directory, called iTunesControl with a size of about 20 MB. Futhermore in the 
newly created iTunes folder (by EphPod) there is now a file "Play Counts" 
whereas in the renamed iTunes folder this file is missing. Instead there is a 
file calles "winPrefs", which is in turn missing in the newly created folder.
