I had a recent need to alter the location in which libgpod looks for the device's control directory. This is useful for us because we don't really want to store this information on the device (though it makes perfect sense for gtkpod to do so).
I'm not sure if there have been any issues with different apps clobbering info stored in the device directory, but if so this may be of use to others who are using libgpod.
It's not a large change, but if people are interested in incorporating the changes, they can be pulled from github:
