Exactly :-)

Highly unlikely, as it works when just copying data (at the moment via
nautilus, 17.5GB, so far 7GB and no problem) and it works from a virtual
machine under Windows.

What might be the case is a USB hardware issue which only shows under
Linux which only shows when using gtkpod, banshee et al.

You know more about that: which program is in common when using gtkpod,
and banshee, but not used when copying data to the iPod touch vie
nautilus? But it is used when mounting via gvfs and ifuse.

Agreed - I will remember the next time it happens - but I am a little
reluctant to try it out at the moment, as my iPod is finally where I
want it to be, and I had a few cases where the disconnect required a
complete removal of all tracks to get it working again.
But I will add dmesg to my mental pinboard under the category "to check
when iPod disconnects again".
