Using libgpod, I have written a small C program[1] to copy a given mp3 to an iPod. This works, actually -- tracks are present in the itdb after unmounting and remounting the ipod. However, when I look on the iPod itself, the tracks are nowhere to be found. The only indication of error is the following message: ** (process:27501): CRITICAL **: itdb_splr_validate: assertion `at != ITDB_SPLAT_UNKNOWN' failed >From digging around in the source code of libgpod, it looks like all this means is that the library encountered a weird smart playlist.
