Today's testing results

Today, four Consumers met on The Downs. We had a play with MeshAP from
LocustWorld.com. We were able to connect to one MeshAP node and ping
another. We then went to Alex's house to try the same with a fixed Internet
connection. We were able to connect to the 'net in the road with my laptop
logging into a MeshAP machine in the porch, which relayed data from the
MeshAP machine in the basement. It all looks quite promising.
Rob and I discussed other issues. He stated that the D-Link DWL-900+ access
point may be capable of bridging a network across access points. This means
that rolling out a number of these within range of eachother could
effectively roll out a Consume-style network. He also stated that the new
IEEE802.11g access points may also be capable of this. I intend to find out
whether this is true. I am after a couple of access points, so I may
purchase two.

We also took a brief look at RONJA for optical bandwidth. This will be good
for line-of-sight backbone links as it runs at 10Mbps. I intend to build a
couple of units for testing at some point soon. If anyone has a location to
test these, I'd be interested to hear of it.
