Sure, they can be on different machines. LMTP can use either a UNIX 
socket, or TCP  port connection. Just update cyrus.conf to also listen 
on an external IP address (port 555), update any firewall rules to 
permit the Postfix server to access it, then point Postfix's main.cf at 
the Cyrus server.

I'm working on a setup where multiple frontend Postfix servers can 
connect directly to Cyrus. The frontend mail servers also run Perdition, 
and forward IMAP/POP connections to the backend Cyrus server. 
Technically the "backend Cyrus server" could also be a frontend mail 
server, but that's a moot point.
