It is not possible "out of the box". If you are willing to muck around 
with the code and data templates, I think it could be done. I made 
changes so that users could use their email address for logging in.

There is a downside. You will effectively be starting a new branch of 
the software. Hence, it would be more difficult to keep your branch in 
sync with new upgrades.
