The LDAP dump is 6 MB before compression, but /var/lib/ldap is much larger. And with the proper dump, you can do a "diff -rub " on them over time to see what has changed. I do back it up both manually (eg to /var/lib/ldap.old) and via the nightly rsync off everything of the server.
