Could you apply the supplied unit test for the time being? It probably 
could help in testing while developing a patch. Or does that make no 
sense to you?

It's just a matter of making a downloadable JAR and putting a version 
number on it. It could be labelled an alpha release and have a version 
number below 1.0.
