OK - just for reference I'm getting exactly the same thing:

  |  \/  |__ _Apache__ ___
  | |\/| / _` \ V / -_) ' \  ~ intelligent projects ~
  |_|  |_\__,_|\_/\___|_||_|  v. 1.0

  Plugin 'maven-deploy-plugin' in project 'Merlin Hello Tutorials' is
not
  available

  BUILD FAILED

  No goal [avalon:meta]

Problem appears to me that Maven is not locating the Avalon-Meta plugin.
I did some googling around and found this issue:

  http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/MAVEN-435

I've done a little playing around and a workaround that works here is to
create a directory named 'plugins' under the maven installation
directory. Copy the following jar files into that directory:

  .maven/repository/avalon-meta/plugins/avalon-meta-plugin-1.4.0.jar
  .maven/repository/avalon-util/plugins/avalon-util-plugin-1.0.0.jar
  .maven/repository/merlin/plugins/merlin-plugin-3.3.0.jar

That should get things rolling again.

Steve.
