Merlin is not being discontinued per se; it is being moved to dpml.net
under the name Metro.

Avalon has been a very diverse project with many similar, but different
subprojects such as ECM, Fortress, Phoenix, and Merlin. While initially
we all wanted to work together under the same banner, it has become
apparent that each project needs more space to grow to its fullest
potential. Therefore Avalon is dissolving into three separate projects:

Phoenix      -> Codehaus Loom (http://loom.codehaus.org)
Merlin       -> DPML Metro (http://dpml.net)
ECM/Fortress -> Apache Excalibur (http://excalibur.apache.org)

The code has already been transferred and developers are already at work
in each project. As Niclas pointed out, if you're interested in Merlin,
you should visit DPML and join the Metro mailing lists.
