This issue is to record a performance optimization discussed at FOSDEM 2025 with Mauro, the authoer of the Stallwart labs mail server.

He encountered similar difficulties regarding memory constraints of the UID <-> MSN mapping but approched it as a cache.

He would load upfront the mapping but ensures he only keeps a pool of most recent active mappings, reloading the mappings as needed.

If we identify that memory on IMAP connection is a constraint, and that il mostly suffers from IDLE connections then we could implement a similar approach.
