René Cordier created JAMES-4167:
-----------------------------------
Summary: Triage alternatives to MinIO S3 object storage
Key: JAMES-4167
URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/JAMES-4167
Project: James Server
Issue Type: Test
Reporter: René Cordier
People in the community use MinIO, there is also some tests in james code to make sure it was supported as a S3 object storage.
However MinIO license moved into something not really open source compliant anymore... We need to be able to test and propose better alternatives as s3 object storage for holding James blobs.
There is a bunch of open source S3 object storages on the market, but for now we would like to do some trials with those 3:
- SeaweedFS: seems like a solid option, but it's based on freemium, and some needed features might push people towards an enterprise version. The open source version seems to be a single man project and there could be a chance at some point it takes the same roag as MinIO...
- RustFS: seems to be a strong contender, with good support. More and more people seem backing it up lately. Not production ready yet officially (still in beta) but we could still try, might be robust enough already for James needs
- Garage: mainly to see the compatibility. Not much exposure for now, not backed up much by organisations
If people have other suggestions feel free to propose and discuss them
The goal at first would be to open draft PRs to test those S3 object storage alternatives on top of James like we did for MinIO before.
