postmaster alias not working

I'm running james 3.7.2 and I just attempted to test the postmaster 
alias on my server and realized it's not working. I can confirm the 
mailet is enabled and the postmaster email address is set correctly 
mailetcontainer.xml however when I attempt to send mail to it internally 
thunderbird gives a notice saying the user doesn't exist, if I attempt 
to send mail to it externally from gmail I get 550 unknown user. What am 
I missing? The only thing I've adjusted regarding the postmaster alias 
is the address it goes to
