It failed because the reason provided for retiring it was completely incorrect -- you immediately assumed based on a single user report that the API had been completely inoperable for multiple major releases, but in fact the report turned out to be a user build misconfiguration. If you wish to raise retirement as an option again, I have no problem with that, but please do so in the appropriate channels with the appropriate arguments, rather than in response to every user query and question.
