No need to respin or anything, just trying to identify improvements for =
any future potential 10.x release.

We have challenges verifying with newer JDKs. One of the issues has an =
easy fix, which I just didn=E2=80=99t noticed before, see =
https://github.com/apache/lucene/pull/16284

The smoke test script does not support RUNTIME_JAVA_HOME or =
runtime.java.home. It only knows about --test-alternative-java which =
naively overrides JAVA_HOME for the entire Gradle process. Maybe we =
support runtime.java.home, which should not be hard to do, right?
