Your input file is in xml format, why don't you use Xpath:

XPath xpath = XPathFactory.newInstance().newXPath();
String expression = "/T_CATALOG_ITEM";
InputSource inputSource = new InputSource("catalog.xml");
NodeSet nodes = (NodeSet) xpath.evaluate(expression, inputSource, XPathConstants.NODESET);
