Well.... Apple Double format is just one of the use cases.. 

But we will need to do some specific data storage handling if the
request is from a certain client.... Other than the "user-agent"
information, is there any way I can get this information within the data
storage?

It will (well, should) reflect the type of the content. Doesn't the 
"Apple Double" format have its own content type?
