it would be helpful to support different types of repository managers for indexing and querying remote repositories.

I've taken a look at this: http://svn.codehaus.org/mevenide/trunk/mevenide2/netbeans/libs/indexer/src/main/java/org/codehaus/mevenide/indexer/api/RepositoryIndexer.java
however it was unclear what all the methods were to do and how they interact.

I would be happy to help with an implementation of either this or to produce a certain index format remotely in Archiva if that would be useful.
