Nice is ok. I've had a look at it before.

But people still seem to be reluctant to use other languages targetted
at the JVM. Jython seems to be the most succesfull but both Jython and
Nice are not different enough to make using them (as opposed to Java)
really beneficial.

I think the main problem is the VM. If Java was run in public, instead
of by a marketing department, the JVM might have changed quite a bit
into a platform for many other languages, rather than just a Java
host.

To be generally useful the VM would have to allow better stack capture
and not be so tightly bound to classes.
