I also noticed that webshpere (or was it weblogic) now
deprecates the use of Beanshell as a supported scripting
language.

Beanshell's development has always been tightly held by
the author; not a collaborative effort. If Beanshell is
to survive it might be time to, for example, make an
apache project out of it. Such an action would result in
not only a better tool but also increase the likelihood
that it would continue to exist. An "opensource" tool
needs a critical mass of users for the commercial world to
use it. There is an ever growing list of java scripting
langauges. If Beanshell starts losing users, folks will
notice and users will abandon it in ever increasing numbers.
