I understand what you're saying.  I haven't thought much about including build
tool extensions in the source tree.  My personal view is it could be a project
of its own that includes all generic logic you create anew or extend and then
project-specific scripts or settings belong in the project source.  I don't
think that philosophy would break either extending ant or writing your own
build tool, so we're probably in agreement here.

Never found ant's XML to be excessively verbose, but I'm the cooky one who
writes things like
(Comparator)((BSHTableModel)this.comparatorTable.getModel()).evalValueAt(this.columnModel.getColumn(i).getModelIndex(),
0)

Still I say I would have personally written a scripting ant plug-in and get the
best of both worlds. :)
