BeanShell 2 has a site http://code.google.com/p/beanshell2/ and subverion. 
It is based on the latest beta with numerous bug fixed added.  I'm not sure
what "clean pedigree" means.

I don't understand the need for leaders when there is virtually no one to be
led.  Very few people will actively participate and those few who do should
easily be able to reach agreement on issues as long as they are willing to
speak up.

BeanShell2 has some vararg support
http://code.google.com/p/beanshell2/issues/detail?id=13 and supports
exception chaining.  I think parse-once-run-many was already in BeanShell.

BeanShell2 has multiline strings
http://code.google.com/p/beanshell2/issues/detail?id=20 .  The key problem
with Groovy is that it is not really Java compatible, so you cannot just
take Java code and run it in Groovy.  Adding extra features like multiline
strings to BeanShell does not cause this problem.  Anyone who wants to port
BeanShell back to Java presumably knows Java well enough to be able to avoid
using BeanShell extras.
