Integrating Chiki with existing community system

I'd like to experiment with integrating Chiki with an existing Java based
community system I've developed. There is an existing user base which uses
members' email addresses as the username and an numeric user id as the
primary key in the the members table. There is also a session registry etc
in place.

I notice that Chiki usernames must confirm to the ChikiWord format. Can
anyone suggest a solution that enables the existing sessions and usernames
to be utilized?  (ok I know I should RTFC... for I'm not familiar with 
Struts yet).
