There is a use case for multi-component projects. Like what is described in CC-935, this can be described in config.xml with nested project tags and has an idea of hierarchy in it. The specific, distinct requirements are :

- only the multi-component project gets built by the cruisecontrol server queue

- only the multi-component project can be paused or resumed

- the multi-component project determines the build order of the nested projects using a plugin mechanism. 

- the nested, component projects are checked out from source control per the build date of the enclosing multi-component project. So they do not have an independent build date. This might work well together with making updaters a separate component in CruiseControl.

The multi component project uses the logic of CruiseControl to avoid rebuilding needlessly the lower elements of a stack.

When a component build fails it is easier to find out what has caused the problem than when the build is monolithic. But because developers in our use case check in atomically in the different subcomponents at the same time we need to have this feature to be able to do the check out from source control per the same timestamp for all subcomponents.
