prompt for passwords at cc startup?

I am prevented by policy from storing unencrypted passwords (e.g. for cvs/svn) in files.  I was wondering if it might be possible to write a cc startup wrapper that would prompt for needed passwords and set them so they would become available as properties to cc.  I see that in cc properties can be overridden by enviroment variables.   But executing linux shell scripts can't modify the environment variables (and putting passwords in as environment variables where other processes might see them might not be a good idea either).  

Is there any way to make this work by getting prompted values to override properties at runtime?  Or some other way to make the crendentials available without them being in plain text in files?
