JVM crash

We've been using CruiseControl with very few problems for a long time.  About a month ago, we started seeing this error:

When the error occurs, CC starts reporting that it can't start a new thread, and eventually everything crashes.  Changing the various memory settings doesn't seem to help, or even to change the behavior.

CC is almost unusable in this state.  We have to restart it after every build, to be sure the next build will complete successfully.

The problem is sporadic enough that I can't isolate it to any particular unit of our code, or anything like that.  And we have a lot of moving parts (JUnit running under EMMA instrumentation under ANT under CruiseControl), which makes it very difficult to identify which component is really causing the problem.

At the very least, the crash itself seems to be an internal JVM issue. I have reported it to Sun (though I'm not sure I did it correctly - I haven't received any reply from them).

Now I'm looking for anyone who may have seen something similar, and could suggest a solution or a work-around.  Any ideas?
