Ah, thanks for the explanation, Dan.  That makes sense.

In the meantime, I'm doing the following differently now to accomplish my
goals:
* I created a "Build Log" tab to present the <ant> build output from the
project's log.xml file through some XSLT.  Not exactly the same thing as the
raw Ant output, but it shows the right content when it's needed.
* For the <antpublisher> task, I directed it to save a copy of its log file,
and then copy that to the project's artifacts folder.  I'm usually the one
that needs to examine this under certain circumstances, so I don't mind
going through an XML file.
