Builds hanging - no ProjectController: build result events

My builds are frequently hanging after the ant build has completed.  I get
the usual ant message:

The next line which should say something like...

...never appears.  The build hangs.  Eventually all the build threads hang
and while CruiseControl continues to display things like:

...no modifications are ever detected and forced builds never start, and the
webpage lists that a couple builds in the "building" state for the last 13
hours.  I then restart CC and sometimes it works for a little bit, but then
eventually hangs again.

I've been running 2.6.2 for a long time.  I had to "modify" the CMSynergy
plugin when we moved to Synergy 7.1, but even attempts to upgrade to 2.8.4
have been unsuccessful in resolving this issue.  I'm afraid I've run out of
ideas.

All ideas or questions are greatly appreciated!

P.S.  What's with the single antBuilderOutput.log file for live results?
That doesn't work well with the 6 threads we're running in CC...  Couldn't
it be named after the project being built?

P.P.S. If anyone's interested in the Synergy 7.1 modifications, let me know
and I'd be happy to forward them.  I've also invented a "tasksToIgnore"
feature which allows check-in after successful build and prevents an endless
re-build cycle.
