Dear Reader,

This week, ONJava's very own Sue Spielman returns with the
latest installment in her highly acclaimed JSP and Servlets
column. In it she introduces JSP Standard Tag Libraries
(JSTL), a relatively new and highly useful JSP specification.
The base design philosophy of JSTL is to provide page authors
with a script-free environment. JSTL is still in early access
release, but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't start paying
attention to it now. JSTL is being developed under the JCP in
the JSR-052 expert group, with the purpose of working towards a
common and standard set of custom tags.

Also this week, Joseph Shelby concludes his two-part series on
JAXB and Ant, both available in Sun's recently announced Java Web
Services Developer Pack (WSDP). In part one, Joseph looked at some
advanced uses of Jakarta Ant's build tool, like automatically
executing xjc, the code-from-XML generation tool used for JAXB;
but he found that Ant has some minor flaws in handling one-to-many
file dependencies. There are, however, some fixes for some of
Ant's build-time dependency issues mentioned in his article.

And finally this week, ONJava.com presents the last of three
book excerpts from Chapter 8 Business Logic of Building Java
Enterprise Applications, Vol I: Architecture. This installment
focuses on issues of statefulness and statelessness with the
Forethought business logic introduced in the previous excerpts.

That's all for this week.

Sincerely,
Steve Anglin

HP plans to announce its HP-WSP (HP Web Services Platform) 2.0 at

Java or .NET-based? I suspect .NET in the long-term.
