How well u can make use of this build tool depends what u need and how u write the build.xml. u can compile classes on the run, create Jars, War,Ear, make directories, copy files/directories etc. See the core-tasks and optional tasks that can be done with Ant in the Ant website. All this can be done at runtime when u r application is being executed. I wouldn't say that this would reduce development effort, but surely would be very helpful when u would need to do the above stated things at runtime. Build.xml is the main file which u would need to write for successful implementation of tasks. It is very easy to write that file and there are lots of sites that provide info for writing the xml.
