browser/data updation problem

Hi,

I have a problem...

I am using J2ee technologies...
JSp-->Servlet-->EJB-->DB.... N-tier, MVC Architecture
Now I want to update client view(.jsp)whenever db updated by other Program.
I might use refresh fx of java Script for that I have to set fixed time (say 
30 sec..) .

If data gets updated 5-6 times in between than i wont see all the data 
except last.
If i set refresh time to 5 sec...but if data dont change even browser will 
send request every 5 sec.

So is there any optimized technology/pattern  which can solve my purpose.
