I'm guessing that the schema or catalog settings are incorrect. Try
setting these in the sybase.xml file.
Also make sure, in the samples/build.xml file, that the attributes from
the database xml file are used:
<middlegen
appname="${name}"
prefsdir="${src.dir}"
gui="${gui}"
databaseurl="${database.url}"
initialContextFactory="${java.naming.factory.initial}"
providerURL="${java.naming.provider.url}"
datasourceJNDIName="${name}.database"
driver="${database.driver}"
username="${database.userid}"
password="${database.password}"
schema="${database.schema}"
catalog="${database.catalog}"

You could also try with removing the schema and/or catalog params to the
<middlegen> task in the build.xml file. This has been known to cause
problems, apparently for some drivers there's a different if the get "" or
null specified as schema/catalog.
