Did you make sure that xercesImpl.jar and xml-apis.jar are in 
ANT_HOME/lib?  That is absolutely necessary...especially if you are using 
JDK1.3.x which is probably true in this case.

Also, you definitely need to have xerces-1.4.4-xmlc-2.2.jar in ant's 
internal classpath.  Just because you don't put it in ANT_HOME/lib doesn't 
mean it doesn't need to be available to the XMLC taskdef.  You also need to 
put xmlc.jar, gnu-regexp.jar, and jtidy.jar, and bcel.jar in the Ant 
internal classpath.  If you have questions about how this works, take a 
look at either of the contrib project build.xml files and see how the 
classpath is set up inside the build.xml.

src/org/enhydra/barracuda/contrib/
                                               dbroggisch/webapp/build.xml
                                               sam/webapp/build.xml
