Hi Jake,

I’m trying to install first Barracuda 1.2 on Tomcat 4.1.24 to understand how
it works before trying to do this with Enhydra 5.1.7 but I’m having a
problem with Barracuda Config. Whenever I run it I get the following
exception:

java.lang.NoSuchMethodError:
org.w3c.dom.html.HTMLOptionElement.setSelected(Z)V
            at
org.enhydra.barracuda.core.comp.renderer.html.HTMLSelectRenderer.renderCompo
nent(HTMLSelectRenderer.java:117)
            at
org.enhydra.barracuda.core.comp.BComponent.renderView(BComponent.java:567)
…

It seems that there is a problem with org.w3c.dom.html.HTMLOptionElement. I’
ve copied xerces-1.4.4-xmlc-2.2.jar to $CATALINA_HOME\shared\lib before
starting Tomcat.

Thanks in advance,
Darío

Hi Dario,

Hmm.... tomcat-3.0, heh? That's really old. Actually, there is a
ServerSide article about Enhydra5 and they mention using Tomcat4. See
here...
http://www.theserverside.com/home/thread.jsp?thread_id=15313

Actually, now that I think about it, Tomcat-3 never really enforced the
doctype as the newer Tomcat versions do so you can probably leave the 2.3
doctype. Otherwise, the 2.2 doctype is....

<!DOCTYPE web-app
    PUBLIC "-//Sun Microsystems, Inc.//DTD Web Application 2.2//EN"

I *highly* recommend moving to the latest CVS of Barracuda (destined to be
1.2.0). It contains numerous bugfixes and is quite re-organized since the
1.1.1 release. Lots of new functionality as well.

Try leaving the <listener> elements in there and see if it breaks under
Enhydra or not. If it doesn't, Enhydra probably is using Tomcat 4.x.xx.
And yes, definitely use the "war" target to generate a .war file which will
be generated under Barracuda/WEB-INF/tmp$. Try dropping that into Enhydra
and see what happens. Report back with your findings.

Make sure to read the build_deploy.html doc. Note especially where it talks
about setting up your ant build. Make sure to use Ant-1.5.1+. Ideally, use
Ant-1.5.3-1 (the latest).

Oh, and note that you'll have to put the
Barracuda/WEB-INF/jars/xerces-1.4.4-xmlc-2.2.jar in the Enhydra5 classpath.
That is the only required jar that isn't added to WEB-INF/lib for reasons
explained in "deploy" section of the build_deploy.html document. I don't
know what is involved with putting jars in the server classpath where apps
can see them for Enhydra-5? In Tomcat-4.1.xx, the recommended location is
CATALINA_HOME/shared/lib (for your reference).

Definitely report back on your findings.

later,

Jake

Im using Barracuda 1.1.1 and Enhydra 5.1.7 seems to be using Tomcat 3.0
(that is the text inside the core.properties file that cames in tomcat.jar
of Enhydra 5.1.7). Also, I only have 4 jars in WEB-INF/lib (3 for barracuda
and 1 for log4j) plus 5 jars in WEB-INF/lib-ext. I dont have any <listener>
element in web.xml but it is based on 2.3 DTD.

What do I need to uncomment for converting to 2.2? If you want, you can
answer me to the mailing list. Ive just subscribed to it.

I will try to extract the latest version from the CVS because mine doesnt
even have the waroption for ant and I will let you know if I find something.

Thanks,

Dario

Hi Dario,

What version of Barracuda are you using? I've never actually tested
Barracuda on Enhydra5. Barracuda-1.1.1 did ship with Enhydra 5, but I
didn't test it and I don't know if the Enhydra developers did either? If
you haven't done so, I'd try with the latest CVS. It should be released as
version 1.2.0 early next week so it is mostly in its final state. It would
be good to verify that it runs under the latest Enhydra5. It would be great
if you could help out in verifying that.

I'm a bit in the dark about what Enhydra5 (or 5.1beta7) consists of. What
version of Tomcat does Enhydra5 use? If it uses anything previous to
Tomcat4 internally, then Enhydra5 probably doesn't support servlet-2.3. If
that is the case, double check your web.xml to make sure that any <listener>
elements are commented out. Also, you might need to modify the DTD to be
for servlet-2.2 rather than servlet-2.3....and you'll need to uncomment the

Also, can you verify that both barracuda-admin.jar and barracuda-config.jar
exist in WEB-INF/lib. Actually, if you are using the latest Barracuda CVS,
you should have 17 jars (or 18 if you built the optional contrib jar) in
WEB-INF/lib after the build is finished. You might just want to run "ant
war" to create the .war file. This will get everything in there. Then you
can deploy that .war to enhydra5.

Let me know what you find.

Oh, here's the appropriate links that you will need to read about getting
the latest CVS...and you probably also should subscribe to the BarracudaMVC
mailing list so that you can follow this thread.

http://www.barracudamvc.org/Barracuda/docs/cvs.html
http://barracudamvc.org/lists/listinfo/barracuda

Also, here's a doc showing how to build and deploy Barracuda. The focus is
on using Tomcat-4.1.xx for deployment...
