I think we are beginning to argue about words.
Copyright is concerned with copying of the code, not distribution of a
library/app.
What I meant was the code can be copyrighted to anyone and still use the
LGPL.
The LGPL does not affect the copyright on source code. Copyright law is
separate. 
The LGPL is a license for the library itself and is concerned with
distribution/use - a separate issue.

Indeed. People releasing commercial versions of Barracuda would be bad for the code base IMHO.
