I agree with your concerns about bloatign barracuda. At work we totally rely 
on EJBs or other O-R-mapping tools. 

Maybe Stefan wants to create such jdbc-related classes in a contrib package. 
Then it doesn't introduce any dependencies to the core, but makes the whole 
thing more attractive.
