Since MIDP 1.0 only requires HTTP as a network transport mechanism (TCP/IP is NOT required), some devices may not have a TCP stack and my instead opt to deliver HTTP over some other transport layer. The "use proxy" option specifies whether or not an HTTP proxy server should mediate POP, IMAP, and SMTP operations for your device.
