Well, I think I did all these steps correctly.
 
When I run trying to use the run.bat scripts from the bin directory of

Yet, Shark was able to find the driver when I ran the configure.bat
because I placed the ojdbc14_9.2.0.5.jar in the
C:\Shark-1.1\lib\contrib\ext directory.  The Run script sets the Path to
include this directory.
 
Also, when I run my application, which executes the following code
(using the same Shark.conf file the run.bat script is trying to use):
 
            FileInputStream in;
            Properties sharkProperties = new Properties();
            
            in = new FileInputStream("C:/Shark-1.1/conf/Shark.conf");
            sharkProperties.load(in);

I had trouble getting shark to speak to another (non hsql) database too.
In fact I got all the errors you have reported so far. ;) Anyways,
here's what i finally did: 

1. Delete everything under shark-1.1 to start afresh. 
2. Unzip the downloaded archive into C:\shark1.1 
3. Run configure.bat *as is* from C:\shark1.1\ 
4. Run make.bat  from C:\shark1.1\ 
5. After a bit you will see C:\shark1.1\output folders. 
6. Now go into C:\shark1.1\output\Shark\ and edit configure.properties
according to this link:
http://shark.objectweb.org/doc/1.1/HowTo/how_to.html#d0e11 
This is important: if you want your oracle tables to be created afresh
make sure the un/pw you supply here in configure.properties has
permission to delete and create tables. 
Also configure.properties is where you can set the path to your oracle
jdbc drivers. 
7. (not sure if you need to do this just yet but I had to do it later
anyways..) Edit Shark.conf in C:\shark1.1\output\Shark\conf. I only
editted db un, pw, jdbc driver,  Connection.url. Also I set the cache
sizes to 0 (since I wanted a client app to talk to my db too). Do this
just by uncommenting the following: 
#DatabaseManager.defaults.cache.maxCacheSize=0 
#DatabaseManager.defaults.cache.maxSimpleCacheSize=0 
#DatabaseManager.defaults.cache.maxComplexCacheSize=0 
8. Now run configure.bat (in C:\shark1.1\output\Shark). 
9. When it is done all your tables will be recreated (and empty!) and
you should be ready. 
10. Access your admin client app by running runSA.bat in
C:\shark1.1\output\Shark\bin 

Shark should now be talking to the database of your choice now. 

Also, remember if you want a client app to also talk to this db, make
sure the Shark.conf for your client has a different engine name than the
one the admin client is talking to ("Shark" is the default) and the
caches are set to 0.

Sorry for all the questions.  Maybe I'll document what I did so you
folks never see this stuff again.

I've gotten the configure.bat to run and can see the shark tables in my
database.

When I to start the shark server, my SharkExecutionFlow.log simply says:

2005-06-21 11:24:45,229: SharkEngineManager -> Can't work - Problems
while configuring AuthenticationManager!

It appears the command window has some sort of stack trace, but I'm
obviously not bright enough to figure out how to capture that output in
a XP environment.  Running the "run" script from a cmd window still
opens up another window which closes upon error.

I've updated my Shark.conf file with the following changes:

DatabaseManager.DB.sharkdb.JdbcDriver="oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver"
DatabaseManager.DB.sharkdb.Connection.Url="jdbc:oracle:thin:@server:port
:database"
DatabaseManager.DB.sharkdb.Connection.User="validuserid"
DatabaseManager.DB.sharkdb.Connection.Password="validpassword"
and
DatabaseManager.DB.sharkdb.ClassType=Oracle  (added per some recent
emails from Ben)

All of the values match what I supplied as part of the
configure.properties file.

Is there some where else I can look for a log file????
