Sorry to waste everyone's time.
 
Every single one of these errors was due to having a Shark 1.0 jar file 
mixed into the class path of my application while trying to use Shark 1.1 
jars for everything else.
 
Its actually amazing it got as far as it did.
 
I will now hang my head in shame.

I had Shark 1.1 up and running fine using a HSQL  for the backend 
database.  I?ve recently tried to migrate to using Oracle 8.1.7.4 (JDBC 
driver 8.1.7.1).  I?m running into three  problems:
 
1. Depending on whether I use the POJO interface from my application, or 
one of the admin apps provided in the download (I use the RunSa.bat to 
invoke the SwingClient sharkAdmin), the other attempt fails to connect. 
(Invalid user name or password)
 
I noticed using the Pojo interface from my application resulted in a 
usertable entry where the password was NOT encrypted.  When using the 
SwingClient provided, the password does get encrypted.
 
If I comment out the AuthenticationManagerClassName and the 
UserGroupManagerClassName in my conf file, then I can connect using either 
application, but I don?t know the full ramifications of removing these two 
entries.
 
2. After migrating to Oracle, if I instantiate a task  manually , any 
attempt to retrieve all the activities using the POJO interface gets an 
Oracle error ? Invalid Column Name.
 
Yet this same code works using HSql???
 
3. When I try to create a new process using 
 
      wfConnection.CreateProcess(Package ID, Process ID)
 
I get another Oracle error indicating that nulls are not allowed in the 
ProcessDefName column of the Process table.
 
I checked the DDL scripts for both HSQL and Oracle, and that column is 
listed as Not Null in both so I find it very odd this code would work in 
HSql but not Oracle.
 
If anyone has clues to how to resolve these issues, I?d be interested in 
any ideas or ways to gather more information.
