Hi Mike,

Shark can interpret any and all activities you put into your XPDL. But 
since Shark after all is only software, it cannot know of anything you 
don't code into your XPDL. So if you add a new activity then you'd need to 
update your XPDL so that this new activity appears in it and then you'd 
have to upload the new version to the Shark engine so Shark can know about 
this change.

As to whether Shark can know if town 1 has been passed if the driver only 
checks in at town 2, that would depend on how you have coded the logic for 
the activities and how your XPDL is defined. My guess is, if your process 
is defined such that town 1 has to be passed before town 2 and since these 
are manual activities (at least partially, since the driver after all has 
to drive so Shark cannot complete these activities for you), then the 
driver better check in at town 1 before (s)he checks in at town 2... By 
"checking in" I mean the driver has to log into some kind of software 
which notifies Shark about his/her arrival/departure from the depot.

As you can see there are too many things not defined. Unless you come up 
with an XPDL and code something concrete it is difficult to discuss what 
can happen..

Thanx for the reply.  I've put together the work flows required around 
scanning the parcels into the depot and scanning them out as each driver 
packs them into his vehicle.  The real issue, and I never explained myself 
clearly before, is whether I should create an activity for each town on 
the route the parcel will travel. So if the driver on route1 will pass 
through town1, town2 and town3 then can I have an activity for each town, 
say ArrivedInTown1 (or PassedTown1).  And if so, when a new town gets 
added to a route or a new route is started, does Shark have the facilities 
to generate these town activities.
 
Another question the come to mind, if the driver only checks in at town2, 
does/can Shark assume that town1 has been passed?

My guess is if you are looking for a tool to create/manage a workflow 
process, then you can use Shark. The key is to first white board your 
business process, then come up with all the data variables which you will 
need, all the workflow participants (both human and applications) 
involved, the units of work (activities) in the process, figure out which 
activities are manual and whcih are automatic (and which are a mix) and 
then use JaWE to to create the XPDL for the process using your business 
logic for decision making re. branching etc.. After that all you have to 
do is load the XPDL, instantiate it (using the Shark admin tool) and you 
are off to the races..:)

Hi,

I'll looking for a tool to develop a parcel tracking system for a long
distance courier company and was wondering if I could use Shark.  They 
have
10 routes with multiple stops and transport about 300 parcels per day. Has
anyone tried this or is Shark the wrong tool.
