performance of ldap user/group implementation

Hi, Is anyone using the ldap user/group implementation? It's working for us, but is severely slow. What's interesting is that when we create processes or complete activities, it queries our ldap server thousands of times. Maybe we just don't have something configured correctly. But before we get too deep, I'd like to just wondering if someone could confirm they are successfully using ldap for users and groups. If it matters, we're using openldap bundled in cygwin.
