class implemented external reference datatype persistence

Hello,

Can someone tell me how persistence is managed for workflow relevent datas
which are handled as external datatypes, implemented as .class files? Do
I need to make the class Serializable/Externalizable? Is there a maximum payload size
for the datatype (will i run into problems if i create a datatype weighting about 10M?)
