'xmlc' is /usr/local/enhydra5.1/bin/xmlc, a shell script that sets up
CLASSPATH and invokes XMLC.

The good news is that I just unpacked the xmlc-2.2 release, modified the
'xmlc' shell script to work with this xmlc-2.2 and it compiles my
"a.html" without any error.

In short, xmlc-2.2 is OK. Now I need to find out what's wrong with the
upcoming Enhydra5.1.

sorry, I haven't even bothered extracting your examples when I find out
that the standard works OK. Hope you don't mind it. And sorry I didn't
download the xmlc-2.2 release yesterday to give it a try.

It's some kind of CLASSPATH problem since the three necessary jars
(xmlc, xhtml and xml-apis) are actually identical in xmlc-2.2 release
and the upcoming Enhydra 5.1.

I am investigating it further.
