Category: Core engine Group: None >Status: Open Resolution: Wont Fix Priority: 3 Private: No Submitted By: Alexis Bezverkhyy (grapsus) Assigned to: Philip Aston (philipa) Summary: Grinder 3.4 doesn't build with Jython 2.5 Initial Comment: It is impossible to build Grinder 3.4 with Jython 2.5. When I replace Jython 2.5 with the jar from Jython 2.1 everything goes fine. I'm trying to package the Grinder for Debian and this issue makes the build too complicated. Please correct it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- >Comment By: Alexis Bezverkhyy (grapsus) Date: 2011-08-05 17:43 Message: Good, in fact I will be able to produce a Debian policy compliant package as soon as the SVN trunk drops this Jython dependency. I think the proper packaging is really important, having a zip with a bunch of jar files is good for your desktop computer, but you can't always do that in production environment and many people just won't use your software if they can't easily make a clean system-wide installation. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Philip Aston (philipa) Date: 2011-08-05 17:33 Message: Thanks for your understanding, and for making me aware of this issue. To be clear, I hope to release 3.5 sometime this month, and it will still rely on Jython 2.2.1. I expect to remove the Jython dependency in 3.6 or 3.7, but that won't be until next year. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Alexis Bezverkhyy (grapsus) Date: 2011-08-05 16:47 Message: For things like Python interpreters you can usually have several versions installed (like python2.6 and python2.7 packages at the same time). But Jython 2.2.1 is just too old and they removed it from the archive. Building it along with the Grinder won't be accepted and shipping a .jar in a source won't be allowed either. I understand your current dependency on Jython 2.2.1. I think the best way to deal with the problem is to host the current package (built with Jython 2.2.1 jar) on my own non official repository and wait for the next version which won't be dependent on it anymore. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Philip Aston (philipa) Date: 2011-08-05 08:27 Message: Jython 2.2.1 is the default Jython version used by the current version of The Grinder. The proposed compilation option would result in a non-standard build of The Grinder which would not match the documentation, and require more support. The Jython 2.2.1 dependency will be removed in a future version of The Grinder. Recently, I've managed to fix all the known issues with the new instrumentation engine (referred to below), but it needs wider testing before I make it the default. I'm not familiar with the hoops that Debian requires you to jump through. Does it support multiple installations of different versions of Jython? If not, then you'll have to keep a private version of Jython 2.2.1 in your package. Why not take the Jython 2.2.1 sources, and build upon that - i.e. create a package that builds both Jython and The Grinder from source? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Alexis Bezverkhyy (grapsus) Date: 2011-07-13 16:00 Message: That's exacly what I'm doing, but it's a very dirty hack and no open source distribution will accept such a package in its official repo. You should at least provide a compilation option so that the old API could be disabled and Grinder built without it. That would permit me to propose my Debian package for its integration to the main Debian archive. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Philip Aston (philipa) Date: 2011-07-13 12:21 Message: Currently The Grinder uses Jython 2.2.1, and depends on it by default. It relies on Jython internal APIs that were changed in an incompatible way in 2.5. There is a work in progress to introduce a more capable instrumentation engine that has no direct dependence on Jython, however this is not yet the default engine and has known issues (2958145, 2992248, 3287570). As a work around, you might obtain a copy of the Jython 2.2.1 jar file and drop it into the lib directory. This will allow the build to complete. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=118598&aid=3324088&group_id=18598 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ BlackBerry® DevCon Americas, Oct. 18-20, San Francisco, CA The must-attend event for mobile developers.
