Deeper analysis of performance issues require server (CPU, disk, network)
and service (queue sizes, thread pool sizes, garbage collection tuning,
etc.) resource measurements to understand where the application bottlenecks
are.

Incidentally, Graphite is a very good open source monitoring tool and
there's a Grinder interface to it:

Correlating over time the application's performance as compared to external
measurements made by The Grinder is a great way of isolating application
bottlenecks.
