I tried to reproduce this. Since Ubuntu uses UTF-8 as default charset, I started Helma with -Dfile.encoding=ISO8859_1. Then setting skinCharset to UTF8 or UTF-8 rendered the (utf8 encoded) euro sign ok, while not setting skinCharset rendered â¬. Pretty much as it should.
