Tasks?

It looks like there's a way to have tasks associated with a project.
The task window gives me a way to create task categories but I can't
see how to generate tasks.
It looks like there's a way to link this to a repository (I use
gitLab), but I don't see how to actually do it.  The online
documentation it references shows how an interface should work but not
how to actually invoke it.

How does this work?
