Logging into Tomcat Stand-alone

I just installed the JLCP war in webapps and fired up Tomcat and have a
JLCP running. I even get to the admin console but cannot log in and
connot find info on how to login (username/pw). Also, I cannot register
a new user. 
 
Is there a write-up on setting up and using the Tomcat stand-alone
version? 
 
>From what I gather, the standalone version uses the McKoi db engine but
the mckoidb.jar is not in the distribution. I tried to add it but it did
not improve things.
