ServletFilter o PhaseListener.

Hola.
Les presento la siguiente duda a ver si me pueden ayudar.

Teniendo una aplicacion  JSF que es mejor implementar el "Login check" en un ServletFilter o en PhaseListener de JSF.

Una diferencia que observo es que PhaseListener se configura en el faces-config, por lo que es solo para aplicaciones jsf.
En cambio ServletFilter es mas generico al configurarse en el web.xml.

Que aconsejan.
